CHAPTER 18

And so the weeks continued, with Cameron readying his men for their mission, the twins getting settled into the Keep, and Lissa beginning to make more friends around her new home. Brianna was definitely the person she related most to, but she was pleased to be developing a few more friendships with some of the other women, too. Belle had been a profiler for the FBI before the MacClaran magic had pulled her back into this place and time, and Lissa found that their psychology backgrounds gave them enough in common to find all the other differences in their fields fascinating. She liked Maria, too — an outspoken, funny woman who’d been an author in the twenty-first century and was still finding ways of using those skills in the here and now. Her skepticism was refreshing, and her eye-rolling attitude to the undeniably magical elements of their presence here always made Lissa laugh.

It was good to have the other women’s insights and experiences to draw on when it came to settling into her new home… but none of them, to her dismay, had any experience with children being part of the story, at least not prior to them coming here, now several had children of their own. They all commiserated when it came to her concerns about her relationship with Cameron, however. It was a reasonable enough worry, when you were the spitting image of someone else’s lost love, that they were seeing someone else and not you when they looked at you…

“Time’s the answer,” Belle said with a shrug of her shoulders. “The more time he spent with me, the more Tommy understood that I was my own person.”

“And Cameron has a good head on his shoulders,” Maria said, pinning her with a hard, direct stare that always made her feel like she was on trial, somehow. “He knows you’re not really her, doesn’t he? He’s not mixing up your names or anything.”

“No, of course not.” She bit her lip. There was no point hiding her attraction to Cameron from the other women — they’d all been through it themselves, and though she’d attempted to dissemble at first, it hadn’t lasted long. “And he’s… I mean, he remembers everything I tell him about myself. He’s so interested in Chicago, in my work, in my life… he must know I’m a different person. I’m glad he’s attracted to me, too, I’m just… I’m worried about moving too fast, you know?”

Brianna nodded, reaching across the table to touch her hand affectionately. “Very sensible of you, too.”

“You’ve got all the time in the world,” Belle said firmly. “No need to rush things.”

“But I want to,” she whined, only half joking, and her new friends laughed along with her.

They made no mention of the kiss, as the days went on, and Lissa was almost beginning to suspect it really had been some kind of fever dream. They kept things friendly when they were together, and for all that it was difficult to work around the elephant in the room, Lissa found herself growing to like him more and more.
